THREE YEAR UPDATE - Excellent for Five Gallon Betta Planted Tank

THREE YEAR UPDATE - Excellent for Five Gallon Betta Planted Tank
ORIGINAL REVIEW APRIL 2020:I'd spent some time trying different small power filters for planted Betta tanks and found that most of them start rattling and dying within a month of operation. I suspect the manufacturing and QC on small pumps is either difficult or, frankly, just cheap. Then I ran across these. There were just a handful of reviews but I figured on giving them a try and I'm sincerely glad I did. I put them into operation approximately five days ago. Here's some pros and cons:Pros:Small sizeVery low noiseAdjustable water flow (surprising for such a small package)Low costCons:Filter media is basically non-existent other than what comes with the package.Regarding the filter media I purchased a box of Fluval Aqua Clear 30 foam inserts and cut them in half and then cut them lengthwise (not all the way through, just enough so I could fold them back like a book). I did this so I could put a small amount of carbon and zeolites. That sounds a bit confusing so see the photos - I took one with the cover off. I also took a photo of the foam inserts. In the photo, the yellow and black inserts are what come with the filter. The center white foam block is the full size AC30. The one of the right is the half-cut.Regarding the size, this was a huge plus. If you use any of the low-slung LED lights as pictured (I have two sets per tank), you won't be able to hang the filter on the back of the tank. However, the dimensions of this filter are such that you can hang them on the side straddling the feet of the light. They fit perfectly.Bettas generally do not like high current filters so many of the standard HOB filters that I would normally go with were out of the question. At its lowest setting, the current is just enough to get some slow water movement in the tank but does not impede the fish or their food, at all.Overall, I am very pleased with this entry into the market (I'm not sure how long this filters been available so maybe I'm just late!). This is a great pickup for those with small Betta tanks.I'll update this review in a few months - long enough to see how well they do after some extended use.UPDATE FEB 2023:Well, a bit more than a few months later ...Overall, the above comments and observations are still correct. However, I am dropping my rating by one star (down to four stars) as one of the two filters has developed a problem. Here's the issue:At the top of the intake tube is a small rotating valve that allows you to control the water flow through the filter. A nice item and one that's sort of surprising on such a small HOB filter. However, the valve now has a small leak and air is entering the intake tube causing cavitation and a loss in flow.It started really slowly - just a bubble or so every once in a while - and was barely noticeable. Now the cavitation, noise, and loss in flow is constant. I may just seal the valve in the open position with some glue and call it good. An unfortunate problem.I'll update the review again if more problems arise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little nano aquarium filter
Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2023
I tried several aquarium pumps/filter for a 3-gallon freshwater tank, but this one is by far the best filter I've seen. It is very well made, is very quiet, and is compact. Because I am working with a planted tank, the filter needed to have room for a small UV light to fit in the back of the filter. This one has plenty of space for the UV light as well as the small media filters that came with the pump. When my existing pump died, I just let the tank sit, so the plants died and the water became murky. I replaced the filter with this Aquarium Masters, and in one hour, the water was so much clearer. I would highly recommend this filter if you have a small tank.

LWD
5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for my 3 Gal. nano.
Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2021
This is the 2nd EA filter I ordered for my 3 gallon aquarium. The first ran flawlessly for two and a half years of continuous operation and it still performs like new; however, it became difficult to thoroughly clean the plastic components so I treated myself to a new one. I'll keep the other as a spare if ever the need arises. -- Like the first filter, the new one is very quiet. If I concentrate, it is barely audible. Otherwise I cannot hear the filter.

As per the photo, I depend on plants for biologic filtration. The only material I use with the power filter is Aquaflow filter medium that I bought on Amazon. That combination, along with 10% water changes every week or two, yields a healthy, balanced aquarium stocked with nano shrimp and H. formosa (least killifish).

Initial review:
I have a 3 gallon freshwater nano aquarium that I set up using a 12" diameter, 8" high cylindrical glass vase. When I ordered the filter, I wasn't sure it would fit the tank's curvature: but it fits perfectly. The EA unit comes with a nice sponge pre-filter which I left in place. However, I replaced the two internal sponge filters (see below). There is even a small amount of room for activated charcoal in a small (cut down) mesh pouch, and also for a few BioMax pellets.

It's easy to adjust the flow rate. The filter is essentially silent . On rare occasions, it does "buzz", but turning it off for 30 seconds and then re-starting the filter resolves the noise issue. As long as the water level in the tank is at or above a marked line, the pump will not need to be primed after shutting off the power. I can do a 30% water change without turning off the filter. If do turn it off during the water change, it re-starts without needing to prime the filter box.

It's perfect for a 3 gallon aquarium.

The item itself is great. It fits perfectly with a betta fish small tank. It came on time and works pretty well. I highly recommend it for a nano or small tank.
